We started hearing rumors of a much bigger storm that was headed our way-with ice and snow again. They warned and warned and warned everyone, so that we didn't have another situation like before. On Monday, we went to Walmart to get some food and supplies. They warned us that many people would lose power and even said it could be "catastrophic". When the professionals use words like that, you pay attention. The kids had rehearsal that night for their upcoming production of Les Mis (they were in tech week) so Jennifer had to drive again. We got word around noon that the schools cancelled all after school activities for Monday night.
Two days earlier, they rehearsed 9 am-9 pm and did very well so the director adjusted Sunday's rehearsal from 2 - 9 to 2-6. When they started saying weather may wreak havoc with the week, they decided they better keep it 2-9 pm on Sunday. They told the kids to bring enough clothes and stuff to school on Monday for 4 days. They were going to try to find a hotel within walking distance to the Cobb Civic Center so that IF we were snowed in, at least they could rehearse.
Jennifer packed all her supplies including snow boots and headed to school on Monday. Mr Timmerman arranged for all the students in Les Mis to stay at the Hilton Marietta Country Club hotel for 3 nights. That is 70 kids that he would have for 3 nights in a snowed in situation where they would need to walk almost a mile to get to the civic center. I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but understood the need for them to practice. After all....the show must go on.
They called the kids out of lunch on Monday and said that he had arranged the rooms, but a parent called the school board and complained and the school board called and told him he couldn't do that. So, the hotel was out. And he told them to go home after school and wait to see what happens.
She got home fine that night, actually stopping to have dinner with her friends who were all SO disappointed that they didn't get to spend the night together at the hotel. I really did think how much fun they would have had and the memories that would have been made. Oh well.....she was so disappointed when she called to tell me.
So, it started Monday night as expected with snow/wintry mix/ice. Tuesday wasn't too bad but most people stayed home and inside if they could. Dale actually started getting really sick Monday night and was up most of the night. I was afraid that it might be the flu and didn't want to get stuck at home without any meds. We got a doc appointment for him hoping to get him some Tamiflu in time if he had the flu. So, we had to drive to the doc that afternoon and the doctor said he had an upper respiratory viral infection, but not the flu. He ended up being sick ALL week and stayed home longer than he ever has. I guess if you have get sick, that was a good time for it since he couldn't work anyway. He was home from Monday (except doc appt on Tuesday) until Saturday night when he went to Jennifer's production for her birthday.
Wednesday was the worst day as everything was totally iced over and sleeted almost all day forming more ice. The kids and I did get out and sled for a while and had fun in the ice.
Thursday was the best day. Overnight, it dumped about 3-4 inches of snow onto the layer of ice and it was beautiful. We played for quite a while in the snow and built a snowman.
Needless to say, no school or rehearsals after Monday. They were supposed to have their opening night on Thursday but still hadn't done a complete run through. They cancelled Thursday night performance and added a matinee show for Saturday. They called them in Friday at noon to rehearse ONE time before they opened on Friday night. I will do another post about the show.

The birds couldn't get to food, so this huge flock of birds went under the trampoline and stayed forever digging for food. We tried to throw some birdseed on the deck but it was covered in ice in a few minutes.

Jake did NOT know what to think about the kids sledding. He ran along beside them and tried to pull our gloves off.

Justin going down the BIG hill where he had to avoid the parked cars this time.

Thankfully it started to finally melt on Thursday and it warmed up enough to dry the roads. Many people lost power but it wasn't as bad as they anticipated that it might be. So thankful that we didn't lose power and were able to enjoy our time at home as a family.
