Jennifer also had one of the highlights of her swimming career this summer. In one of the first meets of the season, Jennifer was swimming anchor in the girls 13-14 yo medley relay. Jordan started the team off with the backstroke and got us a great start. The next girl dove in and did the breast stroke. She lost a little of the lead and made it where it was a close race. The next girl dove in and did the butterfly and lost quite a bit of time over the other team. So, by the time Jennifer was to jump in, the other team had about half a pool's length lead. However, as soon as Jennifer jumped in to do the last leg (Freestyle) it was obvious to everyone that she was a better swimmer than this other girl that she was swimming against. So, it became a matter of seeing if Jennifer could possibly catch her. Jennifer swam her little heart out and was making up a lot of time. At the flip time heading into her last lap, the girl still had the lead but Jennifer was cutting that lead dramatically. EVERYONE in the pool area was yelling for their team to GOO!!! GOOO!!! GOOOO!!! We were yelling for Jennifer, of course!! But everyone was yelling and into it. Jennifer caught up with her about 10-15 yards away from the wall and then pulled ahead for the victory!! I so wish that I could have caught it on video but I sure enjoyed the moment.
Everyone was congratulating her as she stood behind the blocks. She didn't come over to us for about 5 minutes. She told me later that her legs were shaking she had pushed so hard. We were very proud of her effort!!
The next day in the email that comes out after each meet from our team manager, Jennifer had a special mention. I have never seen anyone pointed out before like that so we were extremely shocked. Here is the email:
Congratulations on a great effort last night. Those swimmers who completed their events, swam fast and represented the team wonderfully. And, a special "shout out" to Jennifer Jones who swam the anchor leg (freestyle) in the girls 13-14 medley relay and snatched victory from their relay team in the last 10 yards of the pool. WAY TO GO, JENNIFER!
Jennifer was especially proud of that ribbon that she earned for that race and took it with her to each of the remaining meets. She did a great job this season and kept a great attitude even though it can be difficult swimming against girls that swim year-round for the most part. We are proud of you Jennifer!
Jennifer is in the pink cap
