I thought I was going to get crowned yesterday...

I will admit it...I'm such a baby when it comes to going to the dentist and having ANY kind of dental work done even though I have never had anything but cavities filled and my wisdom teeth removed (where fortunately they put me to sleep!).

Well, the dentist has been telling me for a while every time I go see him that there is a crown in my future.  I had some fillings that I got as a child that were breaking down and he could tell I was on my way to getting a crown.  So, I kept putting it off and off.  Finally, this last visit he strongly encouraged me to go ahead. I knew I would never do it if I told him "I'll make an appt soon" so I went ahead and made it.

So, 3 weeks ago I went in armed with books (Breaking Dawn) , magazines, Jennifer's i-touch so I could listen to music and get in my "happy place" and my phone so I could text my praying friends and family, and my organizer in case I was there a long time. :)  They deadened me with several shots, so much so that my ear was dead when I put the earbud in there to listen to music. I just didn't want to hear the drilling part and it worked for the most part.  But then they were doing something with electrical something or another and had to put a grounding plate under my shoulder because I could still feel something.

And let me just go on record now and say that I love that thing that holds your mouth open so you don't have to. I have a small mouth(believe it or not) and it hurts to open it that wide for that long.

I might have a small mouth but I have a STRONG gag reflex. And we had to do several molds where they put this goo in your mouth and you have to let it harden in there to get an impression. When the assistant did it the first time, she told me not to bite her finger.  I really thought that sounded dumb...why would I bite her finger??!!  I'm not a 2 yr old!  Well, a few minutes later she jumped up and let out a startled scream...which scared me....as I was biting her finger....and had no idea!!! I felt so bad and started to apologize with all that stuff in my mouth which was not a good idea since it hadn't hardened.

Then it happened again.  I figured out the reason she told me not to bite her after all.  You really can't feel anything so you have no idea if and when you bite her or anything. So, I really don't know what I could have done differently...but still felt bad.  She did tell me that I didn't bite near as hard as the man on Monday and he bit her 6 times!!

On the last full mouth impression, I totally couldn't do it because I kept gagging (I know TMI!!!). So, she finally quit trying and just said that what we had would have to do.  They put a temporary crown in and I was supposed to get my permanent crown yesterday.

When I went in, I was totally expecting to be deadened again.  But she started putting these plier-looking things in my mouth right away. I quickly snapped my mouth closed and told her that they had not deadened me yet. She politely told me that they don't do that for this visit. I was shocked and totally taken by surprise.  I was NOT ready for this!! I told her I better listen to some music, but couldn't get it going. She tried again and I jumped and scared her.  She told me that they do this all the time, so I sucked it up and told her to go ahead.  She did it and it didn't hurt too bad.

Well, they got the crown in and it fit but had too much space between the teeth so it has to go back to the lab again.  Ugh!!

So, I get to do it all again in 2 weeks, but this time I will know (because I asked!!) not to expect to be numb for any of it. And I will try me bestest not to bite anyone!! :)
